About Legal Sea Foods Marketplace
"Our roots go back to 1950 when my father, George, opened a fish market in Cambridge, MA. It was known far and wide for selling only the absolute best seafood, from the "top of the catch." Since then, my family has upheld that same commitment to outstanding quality and freshness. A lot has changed since those early days, but our high standards certainly have not. Now we're honoring our heritage by making Legal Sea Foods available for you to enjoy at home." - Roger Berkowitz
Legal Sea Foods was born in 1950 when George Berkowitz opened a fish market in the Inman Square neighborhood of Cambridge, Massachusetts. He opened it adjacent to his father Harry's grocery store Legal Cash Market where customers were given "Legal Stamps" (forerunners of S&H green stamps) with their purchases. It's here that the "Legal" name became synonymous with quality and freshness.
In 1968, the Berkowitz family opened its first seafood restaurant, right next to the fish market. The fish was simply prepared, either broiled or fried, and served on paper plates at communal picnic tables. Despite the low-key trappings, the food was second to none and word quickly spread.
In the 1970s, George's son, Roger, pioneered a mail order business, shipping fish one by one around the country to those who had heard about Legal Sea Foods' uncompromising standards. Fast forward to today, Roger has introduced LegalSeaFoodsMarketplace.com - an evolution of those earlier years for sure, but also a continuation of a proud tradition. There are decades of experience that go into every box we ship.
Everyone from coast-to-coast can now order Legal Sea Foods' signature seafood and dishes online to enjoy at home. We know you'll be hooked from the very first bite.
